A word from Melbourne Mustangs Coach
Thursday, July 5, 2012 - Submitted by Bill Wilkinson
What a difference a day makes.

After getting pounded on Saturday 10-0 by Adelaide Adrenaline the Melbourne Mustangs came back on “Canada Day”, Sunday July 1, to achieve a 3-2 win over the Adrenaline.

Saturday’s game was a fiasco from the beginning.

Adelaide scored quickly – only 12 seconds into the game. From there they scored quickly and often.

Two power play goals and two shorthanded goals added to their total.

On Sunday afternoon I gave the players several objectives to achieve. First: no goals scored against us in the first and last minute of each period.

The objectives were more to take the pressure off our lads so they would not think about Saturday night’s loss.

Although Adelaide scored first we bounced back to tie the score in the first on a Jake Ebner power play goal.

The second objective was no shorthanded goals.

We accomplished this by changing personnel on the power play and the team executed their instructions well.

In the second period we finished off an odd man rush with a great pass from Matt Anderson across the crease to a streaking Brendan McDowell who banged in the pass to go ahead 2-1.

We continued to play well with Ebner scoring his second of the night, the eventual game winner.

Vadaim Virjassov set the goal up with a great pass and the Mustangs took a two goal lead in the middle of the third period.

At the two minute mark of the third period a late penalty combined with the Adrenaline pulling their goalie gave Adelaide a two man advantage.

They capitalized by excellent puck movement to find a man wide open at the side of the net.

The last minute action was packed and tense but we weathered the storm with solid goaltending by Oliver Wren.

This earned us a much needed win before the season break.

The Sunday game gave us many positives to take in to the second half of the season.
