Perth Thunder took all six points from the weekend’s double header against the Melbourne Mustangs in their final home games of the regular season.
Despite the Mustangs clinching a playoffs berth on Saturday night, thanks to the Melbourne Ices’ victory over the Sydney Ice Dogs, it was a disappointing weekend for the home side with a 5-4 and 5-1 loss to the second placed Thunder.

The first period was end-to-end hockey with plenty of scoring chances, but thanks to Mustangs goalie Fraser Carson and the Thunders Peter Di Salvo, the first period ended 0-0.
It was a particularly tough period for Mustangs forward Pat O’Kane’s, who had another one of his sticks broken with just under 4 minutes to play, adding to 2-stick tally from Saturday’s game.
The second period proved a much more exciting display with Christian Ouellet of the Perth Thunder beating Fraser Carson, opening the scoring with his 13th goal of the season.

The first penalty of the night was awarded to Thunder forward Alistair Punler for roughing, handing the Mustangs a much needed power play opportunity.
With 17 seconds left on the power play, Pat O’Kane was able to push past Di Salvo, scoring the first and only Mustangs goal of the night and his 17th of the season, assisted by Matthew Beattie.
Late in the period, Di Salvo’s attempted to clear a puck from behind his own net, however the puck was fired up into the netting resulting in a delay of game penalty, which was served by Alistair Punler. The Mustangs second power play of the night was unable to beat Perth’s penalty killing unit and Di Salvo’s strong goaltending.
The Thunder finished the second period with a pair of power play goal to Robert Haselhurst and Daniel Goransson , giving the visitors a 3-1 lead.

It was a tough third period for the home side, Andrew Cox scored early and bought the Perth Thunder’s tally to 4. The Mustangs were unable to capitalise on three penalties drawn by Jonathan Bremner, Alistair Punler and Daniel Goransson.
With the clock winding down, the Mustangs pulled Carson for the last 2 minutes, however Thunder forward David Kudla was able to pick up the opportunity and score an empty-netter with 1 minute left to secure the Thunder win.
Despite the double loss this weekend, the Melbourne Mustangs are headed to the AIHL Finals next weekend.
