A Tomas Landa double has helped propel the Sydney Bears to an 8-4 victory over the Perth Thunder at Macquarie Ice Rink on Sunday night.
The game was played at a fast pace through the first two frames, before the Bears scored with 29 seconds remaining in the second period to put the score at 3-2.
Perth looked primed to make a third period comeback, with Jessyko Bernard scoring to bring his side within one goal, but a five goal assault by the Bears ended the game at 8-4.
Sydney Bears coach Ron Kuprowsky said it was important to get the win in regulation.
“We had a game plan we wanted to stick to, we got their defence to move back in front of the net and get traffic in front,” Kuprowsky said. “They’ve got an outstanding goalie, but you can’t stop what you can’t see, so we started sending men in front of the net and throwing pucks towards the net."
“Last night’s overtime loss sort of snapped everyone into shape, so I wasn’t surprised to come out and see everyone give 110% tonight," Kuprowsky said. “You know this is one of the contending teams so it’s always great to beat a team you know will be there at the end.“
The Thunder scored the first two goals of the contest, heading into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead following a Tyler Noseworthy goal with two and a half minutes remaining.
Sydney responded quickly in a dominant second period scoring two goals through Brian Funes and Patrick Ward to go up 3-2.
Jeremy Brücker struck first for the home side in the third period, sparking a five goal onslaught helped by a Tomas Landa double, and an empty net goal by Jackson Brewer.
Perth face the Newcastle Northstars next weekend in a one game homestand, while the Bears head south for a double-header against the Melbourne Mustangs.
